Community Corner
Chicago Deutschland - Plainfield Park District
Follow the German migration and hear of the culture, achievements and struggles of the brewers, skilled craftsmen and so-called “anarchists.” Community life centered on St. Michael’s Church, which became the largest German parish in the city by 1892. Marvel at this Romanesque-style church with its great clock tower and spire. Pass the site of the Haymarket Riot and hear the story of this important event in Chicago history. Drive past the Germania Club, which was founded in 1865. Lakeview, the next hub of the German settlement, was referred to as “Nord Seite.” With Lincoln Avenue as its main artery, this community pulsed with German lift. We will make a quick stop at Dinkel’s Bakery! Visit the Dank Haus German Cultural Center and view their special exhibit “Lost German Chicago.” Enjoy your complete German-style luncheon at Chicago Brauhaus, which includes a choice of Wiener schnitzel or Sauerbraten served with potato, salad, dessert and beverage. While in Lincoln Square, explore the many European specialty shops including Gene’s Sausage, Merz Apothecary and more!
