Surprising DeKalb - Plainfield Park District

Travel with City Ventures to the tranquil countryside of DeKalb.  The Ellwood House, a grand Victorian mansion built for Isaac Ellwood in 1879 is an unexpected treasure.  This completely restored mansion with its chandeliers, Tiffany mosaic, antique woodwork and three-story spiral staircase was home to three generations of the Ellwood family.  Your guided tour will give you a glimpse of a complete household at the turn of the century.  Lunch at the Hillside Restaurant in downtown DeKalb with its fantastic homemade food and baked goods await you!  Your meal begins with a salad, home-baked bread followed by your luncheon choice of: Turkey Pot Pie, Meat Loaf or Quiche.  Dessert, coffee and tea are also included.  Following lunch, tour the nearby meticulously restored 1929 Egyptian Theater. Before heading home drive onto the campus of Northern Illinois University, established in 1895 by Governor John P. Altgeld.  Admire the exterior of the Administration Building, renamed Altgeld Hall and sometimes referred to as the “Castle on
the Hill.”
