For more than a decade, Gigi Barncord has relied on a wheelchair to get around. The Plainfield resident lost both legs in a 1996 car accident, and is confined to a motorized wheelchair.

Fiance Shawn, who has spina bifida, also uses a motorized wheelchair to get around.

In July, the Plainfield couple launched a GoFundMe campaign to help raise the $80,000 they need to purchase a customized, wheelchair-accessible van.

"I have a Ford E250 conversion van with a wheelchair lift that is now damaged and is not repairable. Because the lift is damaged, it's caused us to lose a great deal of independence," Barncord wrote.

The couple is hoping the Plainfield-area community can help them regain their independence. Their campaign is 5 percent to its $80,000 goal.

"The type of Van we need is an E250 Ford Conversion Van or a GMC Van. This van will be able to handle a heavy duty lift that will be able to handle two electric wheelchairs," Barncord wrote. " ... Please help our dream to come true. We want to be able to have our lives back."
