When Does School Close for Christmas in Plainfield?

Plus, some ideas to keep kids busy during break.

The holidays are almost here, and by Monday, the kids will be on winter break.

In District 202 and at St. Mary Immaculate, break lasts from Dec. 23 to Jan. 6. For the older kids, Joliet Junior College's winter break is from Dec. 23 to Jan. 1.

To help parents and kids keep their sanity, here are some ideas of things to do in Plainfield during the break:

Sledding

Get creative

Art Cube Studios, 15116 Des Plaines St. in downtown Plainfield, is closed Christmas week, but classes are scheduled Dec. 31 and beyond. Check out the class schedule and sign up for some fun. Classes are offered for ages 3 to adult.

Play a game

Talk about fun for the whole family. The Wandering Dragon Game Shoppe, 15032 S. Des Plaines St., offers open gaming from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturday (closed Christmas Eve and Christmas day). You can also visit the hobby game shop's website for a full list of upcoming gaming events, from a "Star Wars" card game night to role-playing games and more. 

Art Storytime

The Plainfield Public Library, 15025 S. Illinois St., will host a drop-in art storytime at 6 p.m. Dec. 26. Guests will create a masterpiece based on the featured artist of the month.

Ring in the "Noon Year"

Little ones can have New Year's Eve fun, too. The Plainfield Park District will offer games, crafts and songs, plus a countdown with a balloon drop, for ages 1 to 6 (with parent) from 10:30 a.m. to noon on New Year's Eve at the Heritage Center, 24023 W.
