The Small Screen is Calling Scott Beatty

Local business man Scott Beatty of AU Sports has been tabbed to be part of "A Piece of the Game," a new television show about the world of sports collectibles.

You cannot put a price on friendship, but soon my friend Scott Beatty will be putting a price on almost everything else.  Actually, he will only be appraising sports memorabilia and it is all a part of A Piece of the Game, a television show set to air on WGN on March 16.

Scott is the man behind AU Sports Memorabilia, a local business founded in 1980.  Located in Morton Grove, AU has a national presence, as it is the largest store of its’ kind with over 4 million baseball cards and other sports collectibles in stock.  Over the years, I have built much of my collection at AU or with their help.

When the producers were developing A Piece of the Game, they tabbed Scott to be one of the appraisers.  Since the premise of the show is people bringing in their sports collectibles for value determination, who would be better than the man who has been doing this for years?  Appraising sports memorabilia is a regular part of Scott’s day while running AU Sports.

The show will tape its first episode at Harry Caray’s at Navy Pier on Monday, March 4.  The producers have put out a call to anyone who would like their Chicago related sports memorabilia appraised for free on the show.  All of the necessary info is on the site at www.apieceofthegame.tv.

I will be in attendance for the television taping and not just to support my friend.  I will be bringing something from my memorabilia collection.  It could be my game-used Jody Davis bat, my autographed Ernie Banks card or something else.  I have to give this some thought to have my best chance of making it onto the show.

I can’t help but be excited for my friend, for a local business, for an interesting new show and even for myself.  I plan on following this story and reporting the developments as they occur.

After Scott becomes a big star, I wonder if the pictures I have of the both of us covering various conventions and wrestling events will be worth anything.  I am sure Scott would say my inclusion brings down the value of the pictures.  Yep, you can’t put a price on friendship like that!

As a Commissioner, I would have liked to have seen a comparison of the budget that was presented inRead More our Board packets as a draft at a prior meeting compared to the draft that was put on the table before me at the last meeting so that I can see where the cuts took place. Spending down this year's contingency line items is like a sugar rush and will negatively affect the Park District's future. Prior Boards have been carrying over the contingency amounts from year to year in order to deal with unexpected expenses that inevitably come up. Just last week, the Administration Center was without a/c when the four units failed and needed to be replaced. Where did the funds come from to do that work? Its not as if the Board can go out and raise funds in the private market. That's what businesses CAN and should do, but then a park district is not a business. I resent the statements that prior Boards have been acting in a financially irresponsible manner. The Board has been operating a lean operation for many years.

I am just wondering how long this suspense filled soap opera will continue? Bottom line: HurtadoRead More knew his buddy needed a job...so; he and his majority board members made a mockery of local government due process and gave Mr. Peck a job, even though Hurtado voted with the past board to unanimously select an Exec…who is still under a contract. And then decided there was a need to pay a board secretary (who jumped out of the frying pan…smart move) and then appointed someone without pay. And of course there is a need to have a paid political hack to help publicly spin the board’s craziness via press releases.

I hate to ask the obvious of Mr. Peck (not that I expect him to answer anyway), but why is thisRead More announcement coming from the Executive Director rather than our newly appointed Director of Communications?
