22 Years Later: Looking Back on the Plainfield Tornado

With 260 mph winds, the F5 tornado took just eight minutes to complete its destruction as it cut a swath from Wheatland township to Plainfield, Crest Hill and and Joliet.

It arrived with no warning, killing 29 people, injuring 350 and destroying hundreds of homes as it cut a nearly 16-mile path from Wheatland Township through Plainfield to Crest Hill and Joliet.

Twenty-two years later, anyone old enough to remember can probably tell you exactly where they were when the Plainfield tornado struck at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, 1990.

Ironically, the storm that caused so much destruction — even demolishing  and — also put Plainfield on the map, helping transform it from a small town of 4,500 to a suburb of more than 39,000.

To date, the 1990 disaster remains the only F5 tornado that’s hit the U.S. during August.

Tuesday morning, WGN meteorologist Tom Skilling reflected on the weather conditions that created the deadly tornado on his weather blog:

The heat/humidity combo, in concert with a southbound cold front, the presence of an unusually strong late August jet stream and a dizzyingly sharp vertical decline in temperatures, were part of an atmospheric set-up which rendered the atmosphere explosively unstable--a perfect breeding ground for tornadic thunderstorms, which erupted during the afternoon. From those powerhouse storms, the devastating Plainfield tornado evolved. … The tornado emanated from a southeastbound supercell which had spawned damaging straightline surface winds the length of DeKalb and in sections of west and south Kane County. But it was over the Fox River at Oswego, the thunderstorm was to go tornadic--a violent vortex which roared 15 miles across Crest Hill and Plainfield, destroying everything with which it came in contact.

Thanks, Olddeegee. Still seems unbelievable.

Hard to believe I was only 6 years old when it happened. The memories still seem fresh. I guess that's how you can tell the difference between old and new Plainfield, though. If you were one of the 4,500 living here. That makes you old school Plainfield.

Thanks for posting Oldgeedee - the video seems movie-like. I too remember driving around looking at the damage and seeing St Marys. Lots of towns have old vs. new - it's the town attitude and spirit that make it what it is.

I was a MD-80 Captain for Midway Airlines back then. I flew over the site on the way to Midway, and the path of that Tornado looked like a path from a Bulldozer that destroyed every thing in its path. I'll never forget that flight, and it looked like a war zone below me.

You are 100% correct. Cutting 4 worker's hours is disgusting and disgraceful. I've been talking toRead More alot of people around the schools and sports fields at my childrens activies. Hurtado and Peck are quickly becoming the most hated people of Plainfield; with Booth, Steinys and Silotsky right behind them. They are spending tax payer money extravagantly on their salaries, cars, and God knows what else at the PPD. You've brought shame to yourselves, your families and your friends. If you 5 aren't ashamed of yourselves then you are just plain evil and selfish and deserve the reprecussions coming your way very soon.

I am just wondering how long this suspense filled soap opera will continue? Bottom line: HurtadoRead More knew his buddy needed a job...so; he and his majority board members made a mockery of local government due process and gave Mr. Peck a job, even though Hurtado voted with the past board to unanimously select an Exec…who is still under a contract. And then decided there was a need to pay a board secretary (who jumped out of the frying pan…smart move) and then appointed someone without pay. And of course there is a need to have a paid political hack to help publicly spin the board’s craziness via press releases.

I hate to ask the obvious of Mr. Peck (not that I expect him to answer anyway), but why is thisRead More announcement coming from the Executive Director rather than our newly appointed Director of Communications?
Bad News Bears June 18, 2013 at 02:53 pm
Mr. Peck, please answer 2 questions for me: 1. If you are cutting $800K but AdministrativeRead More Salaries are up over $118K, where are the cuts coming from. I have always been a patron of the Park District and want to know which of my programs your skimming off to pay yourself and Mr. Booth. 2. "Our staff deserves a lot of credit for this budget,” Peck said, “as their efforts to hold the line wherever possible have led to our success on behalf of District residents." Is reducing hours of employees the way you reward your staff now? I'm very upset that you honestly thought that cutting loyal employees hours instead of offering benefits was a good idea. I have a better one, cut the hours of Mr. Booth who has an unnecessary job and use his pay and salaries to offset the 4 loyal part-time workers. I will not hold my breath for your answers since answering questions to the people who pay your salary isn't on your to do list
