Blog: Shhhh! The Bananas Have Something to Say!

When a mom is left to her own devices after the kids go back to school, boredom will push her to trickery.

Ever since I read on a favorite discussion board that you can write a message on a banana skin with a toothpick and it would show up the next day, I have been lying in wait.

The other day I bought some bananas. They taunted me. So I decided to have some fun. With my daughter back in school, I had the day to put my plan in motion. I wrote, “RUN,” “HELP” and “CALL THE POLICE” in the top three bananas … then waited.

The commotion downstairs this morning alerted me to the fact that my family discovered my trickery. “LORI!” shouted my husband. “MOM!!!!” cried my daughter.

I discreetly slipped into the bathroom and plugged in my hair dryer, ignoring their cries of panic.

Over my shoulder, my husband appeared in the mirror. His dimples telling me he KNEW I had done it.

“Honey? What’s this?” he asks as he holds up the "CALL THE POLICE" banana.

“It’s a banana.” I say, fluffing my hair under the warm air.

“I KNOW that … but why is it telling me to call the police?”

Turning off the hair dryer, I look at him in the mirror with clueless concern written all over my face. “Honey, are you mixing up your medications again?”

My husband thrusts the banana in my face, entirely too close for my 40-something eyes to focus on. I take a step back and tilt my head. “Hmm,“ I say and walk out.

My lovely daughter comes in, grinning. “Mom, what did you do?”

I love the way my 7-year-old cuts to the chase. “Why does everyone assume I did it?”

“Cuz it’s your handwriting!” My daughter laughs.

Wow, this is exactly verbatim to the discussion thread I read. Another woman’s family said the EXACT same thing! Curious! I make a mental note to disguise my handwriting for future trickery.

Oh, the laughs I had. My husband, throwing my handiwork into the garbage, eyed me curiously, then cautiously opened the fridge as if he expected the milk to say something to him.

This is tempting me too much. Imagine some poor unsuspecting shopper taking home bananas and then the next day seeing “Hello? Can you see me?” written on a banana the next day.

I must exercise restraint, like my fellow discussion board participants.
