Former Plainfield Enterprise Publisher Dead at Age 74

Merwyn "Babe" Miller was also a guidance counselor at Plainfield High School, according to his obituary.

Merwyn "Babe" Miller, the one-time co-owner and publisher of the Plainfield Enterprise, died Saturday at age 74.

For many years, he also worked as a guidance counselor at Plainfield High School, according to an obituary published in the Joliet Herald News.

Miller, of Yorkville, was born on Feb. 15, 1937, to Clare and Maude (Scott) Miller. He wed Kathryn E. Abrams on June 7, 1958 at the Yorkville Methodist Church; they were married for 45 years until her death in 2003.

Miller, who graduated from Yorkville High School in 1955, was a very active member of the Yorkville community. He was elected to the Yorkville School Board and was a member of the Trinity Church United Methodist, the Bristol-Kendall Volunteer Fire Department and the Yorkville Jaycees, his obituary said.

In addition to his guidance counselor and newspaper careers, he also served as a basketball coach in the Hinckley and East Aurora school districts.

Miller is survived by his children, Cindy (Douglas) Adams of Glencoe, Mike (Cherri) Miller of Jacksonville, N.C., and Jon (Wendy) Miller of Sandwich; his grandchildren, Drew, Nicholas and Emerson Adams, Brittany (Anthony) Gillespie, Paige Miller, Lucas and Nolan Miller; and his great-granddaughter, Addelyn Gillespi.

He is also survived by is siblings, Rebecca Olson of Ottawa, Dennis (Marilyn) Miller of Mt. Carmel, Ind., Jane (Dale) Henricksen of Yorkville, Joanne (Neil) Witt of Custer, S.D., and Loren (Rhonda) Miller of Yorkville.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bryce Miller.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Nelson Funeral Homes & Crematory, 410 E. Countryside Parkway, Yorkville. A funeral service is set for 10 a.m. Nov. 30 at the funeral home, with the Rev. Thomas Cross officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Bristol.
