Hey Mom and Dad: What Holiday Gift Did You Refuse to Buy Your Child?

Parents, Patch wants to hear from you on the questions that get families talking.

Welcome to Hey Mom and Dad—a weekly feature in which we ask our Facebook fans to share their views on parenting.

Every week, we get the conversation started by taking a look back at a question we asked parents the week before on Patch Facebook pages from around the western suburbs.

What's one holiday gift your kids asked for that you refused to get them, and why?

Take a look at what Patch users throughout the south and western suburbs had to say and join the conversation in the comments section.

Joyce C. Holiday Barbie. I despise Barbie in general, but this one is extra trampy.

Amy B. Baby alive! You have to pay for food for the doll and then it goes to the "bathroom". Uh, I have 2 kids that do that.

Jacki M. A cell phone. TV in her room.  Laptop. She is 6.  My husband and I were entertained at her list. She wants Hello Kitty and LaLaLoopsy dolls, mixed with Justin Beiber. Seems like baby girl is growing up fast!  The biggest technology she's getting is an MP4 player. With Hello Kitty ear phones, loaded with Disney Princess music, AND Justin Beiber. A little of both.

Dawn H. Red Ryder BB Gun. But seriously, an iPhone. Has an iPad, why does a 13y/o need both?!?!

Andie G. The new Wii-U. It took us 5 years to get the regular Wii, I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for my 6 year old to sit on the couch all day!

Aime K. My 5th grader wanted an iPod touch, but I said no way. I don't want her more tuned in to it and her friends than the family. Learned that from experience the hard way. Had to tell grandma no way on that one too, lol. We shall see what happens!

So what's your take? Tell us in the comments.

You just keep being a submissive little citizen and saying that all police actions are justified and don't be crying foul when it happens to your family or kids...not all police actions are justified buddy that's just plain Sheeple talk there... You must be a police officer because your words to all comments on police is basically they are gods and can do no wrong...and if you are an officer now we can plainly see what the hell is going on now...yeah sure it's just oka le dokaly for police to shoot children for BB guns...lmao..

You argue that I am wrong about police shooting kids? Then you argue that I am wrong about that being the reason I don't buy my kids one..lmao....you my friend have issues...just looking for some reason to discredit someone......is at how you think you make yourself look better? Lol you say I am wrong in one comment then agree with me in another lol...and you say I am wrong but who nothing...your like the media..just blurt some dumb shit out to try and dis credit someone en give no evidence,examples...or nothing to back your words..now read my comments everywhere I post full of facts, investigative information,statistics.....not just " you are wrong" lol WTH?

Umm lady Shakespeare writings consisted of betrayal, rape, incest, murder, cover ups,delusions,... You don't want your kids to have thoes shooting games, military games, mess with guns,be violent........But are homered by the fact that they become soldiers...who kill people, shoot people, blow people up,become more violent than the average citizen, and cause more destruction than natural disasters....lmao....and I am the one not right huh?...Hummm imagine that..

Like I said...we don't want our kids to have violent video games, mess with guns,be violent, watch violent movies....but we honor and praise them when they become soldiers who.....shoot guns, kill people, blow people up,become more violent than the average citizen, commit suicide at an alarming rate, and cause more damage than natural disasters.....Stop being government fed bull crap, stop trying to live the sheltered life and wake up and realize that not showing your kid some sort of violence can be devastating to them if it happens to them...Not saying be violent towards them but to educate them..let them know there is bad guys, let them know what the military is for and what they do,let them know what terrorists do,let them know what police officers do...if you do not teach your kid you can face violence then you have sheltered them to the point where they will not know who to react to the violence and that can be deadly it's self...It's not video games or movies...it's just the world we live in...As I said no wooden for your kids for lying, screaming at you,stealing,..some cop will teach them, beat them, shoot them, tazer them, and drag them in front of a man that will lock them in a cage for years at a time even for life...but don't teach them that either because it is too violent...but know this my kids know it and will not be a problem to society at all.2nurses and an engineer...it's all about education not restriction

John, I don't need to defend myself to you, however I am a therapist, and have my BA in ECED/ELED, my MA in SPED & PSYC, & a Phd. in Educational Administration & Advocacy. My daughter, was not brought up playing video games or taught to shoot a gun. She graduated valedictorian from Benet Academy, a H.S. that requires academic testing, and accepts the highest scoring students. She started college a year ahead of her peers because she had taken college courses during H.S. She attends an ivy league university on a full academic ride, and is in a Phd. program. What are your credentials John? Violence is NEVER an answer to protecting your family. You must be so proud that your children are 2nd and 3rd marksman from Joliet Central (one of the lowest schools in IL for academics). My child was taught independence and has been cooking, doing laundry and I almost forgot, traveled to 3rd world countries to volunteer & was invited by The President & awarded a Medal of Distinction. (That was sarcasm, in case you didn't recognize it). I am a Dr. who works with families of victims that were killed in tragic events. I'm educated, & hardly sheltered! One final word of advice, you may not want to respond to further comments, you appear ignorant, uneducated, and somewhat delusional. Sincerely, Dr. Maureen
