Community Corner

Hyperlocal?

Given that patch advertises itself as a 'hyperlocal' site for individual communities, it seems to falling further away from that mission statement. Looking at the front page, there is only 1 local story on the whole page(two if being very generous).

I know that after the buyout they lost quite a few employees, and they are stretched very thin. But missing reporting on the park district meeting days ago now, an easy leader in both viewership and comments, isn't helping the site or the residents any.

Luckily, Plainfield has had a shot to the arm in citizen involvement lately, and I encourage anyone and everyone who goes to any meetings to fill the (Town Square/Speakout) sidebars here with their own stories and individual reporting on local agencies. Currently, these sidebar stories contributed by individual residents are drawing the most viewers and comments - far over the regular patch stories.

Park district, village, library and fire boards, abandoned houses being (poorly)used by local agencies are just the tip of some of the good things that local residents are engaging in discussing. Let's keep it up!

I've also heard a few rumblings of a more local board being setup outside of Patch to facilitate this communication between residents. The need is obviously there, and Plainfields lack of adopting and leveraging the benefits of this new technology like surrounding towns have, has left a perfect opportunity for someone else to fill the void.
