Original story, 9:39 p.m. Aug. 28:

A 17-year-old boy drowned in an apparent late-summer swimming caper gone bad on Wednesday night at the Elmhurst-Chicago Stone Co. quarry in Bolingbrook, according to Bolingbrook Police Lt. Mike Rompa.

Rompa said the boy's body was pulled from the water at 9:04 p.m. by the Plainfield Dive Team. Teams from Bolingbrook, Woodridge, Naperville and Lisle also were on the scene, according to one eye witness.

The divers were directed to the spot where the teen last was spotted by two friends at the scene—1421 W. 135th St.—according to the eye witness. Rompa said three teens entered the quarry at approximately 7:30 p.m.

"The three were swimming laps across a section of the quarry which is water-filled, when one of the boys began to struggle," Rompa said. "Both of the boys attempted to render aid but were unsuccessful. He went under the water and did not resurface."

No further details are available at this point, Rompa said.
