2 Small Children Remain in Critical Condition Following Wreck

Joliet police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding a three-vehicle accident on Sunday morning in Kendall County.

Two children—ages 2 and 5—remained in critical condition Monday morning following a three-vehicle accident on Sunday at the intersection of Grove Road and Caton Farm Road, according to Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner.

The children suffered life-threatening injuries after the mini-van they were riding in was struck by a Ford pickup truck that failed to stop at a four-way stop, Roechner said.

He said they were taken to Presence Saint Joseph Medical Center and later air-lifted to Hope Children's Hospital in Oak Lawn.

Roechner said the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. on Sunday. He said a mini-van with a husband and a wife onboard along with their two children—heading out for a day of fun at a nearby pumpkin patch—was traveling southbound on Grove Road.

Roechner said the mini-stopped at the intersection of Grove and Caton Farm.

"When they proceeded through the intersection, that's when a Ford pickup truck traveling westbound on Caton Farm with a husband and a wife in it—two people—failed to stop at the stop sign, striking the van just behind the driver's door, on the driver's side of the vehicle," Roechner said.

He said the mini-van was pushed into an SUV traveling eastbound on Caton Farm Road that was stopped at the stop sign. He said both the mini-van and the pickup truck ended up in the ditch on the southwest corner of the intersection.

No tickets or charges have been filed as of yet because the investigation into the accident is ongoing, Roechner said. He said police reconstructionists were on the scene Monday working to put all the details together.
