Alleged DUI Driver Hits Two Poles Before Stopping

Woman breaks her hand in the crash near U.S. 30 and 143rd Street, and is charged with driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident.

A Plainfield woman was charged with driving under the influence Monday night after striking two poles near the intersection of U.S. 30 and 143rd Street, Sgt. Mike Fisher said.

Carolyn Mason, 58, of 14316 Meadow Lane, broke her left hand in the crash, Fisher said.

The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m. Mason was driving southbound on U.S. 30 when she struck a pole, went down an embankment, hit another pole and then came to a stop near U.S. 30 and Fieldbrook Drive, Fisher said.

A Plainfield Patch reader said she narrowly missed having her truck struck by Mason's vehicle shortly before the accident.

"My daughter and I were almost killed by her," the reader wrote in an email.

"I may have been going 30 mph and a (vehicle) was coming at us from the shoulder of the road, heading south head on at a rate of over 25 mph. ... If I did not swerve drastically, we would be dead or severely hurt. ... I actually held my breath as if you knew you would be hit, like in bumper cars, and I thought there was no way she was gonna miss me."
