Bull Lawsuit Filed in Connection With Kendall County Crash

A Joliet man injured when he crashed his car into a bull is blaming the animal's owner.

A Joliet man is suing the owner of a bull for allegedly letting the animal walk out on a Kendall County road and into the path of his Toyota.

The lawsuit filed on behalf of Joliet resident Ghulam D. Butt claims that after running head-on into the bull Butt crashed into a ditch and was injured.

Butt's son directed questions about the crash and lawsuit to his attorney. But the lawyer who filed the lawsuit, Mark T. Schneid of Naperville, failed to return calls for comment.

According to the lawsuit, Butt was heading south on Ridge Road in Na-Au-Say township on Aug. 30 when a "bull animal walked into the roadway directly in front of (his) vehicle causing a severe frontal impact to (his) vehicle and causing (Butt) to lose control and crash into a ditch."

The suit blames Romero Sanchez of Joliet for allegedly letting the bull loose. The suit also claims Sanchez owns the bull.

Sanchez could not be immediately reached for comment.

Butt's son declined to say how badly his father was hurt or if the injuries he allegedly suffered in the crash still plague him. Butt was treated at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center after the crash.

The lawsuit makes no mention of what became of the bull, but the Plainfield police ended up putting it out of its misery after he ran into it with his car.

Did you look at the photos of the car? The owner of he bull is responsible. He's lucky the driver wasn't killed. No bull.

Isn't that road a Bull-a-vard established by the steer-ing committee?
nic December 7, 2012 at 03:07 pm
I was driving down that road that night. I could see the moonlight on the bull's hide as he writhed in pain. Point is, the guy was driving to fast, as most do down that road, and did not slow when there was an object in the road. Bull's don't move as fast as a deer. They can't just jump out at you. Additionally, anyone driving down that road knows there are farms around and possibly animals. I once picked up a Basset Hound that was in the road near the intersection at 126.

Sue for what? Would he sue the State if he struck a deer in the roadway. Dark and unfamiliar road drive slower and more cautiously.
Melissa R. Olin-Gibson December 7, 2012 at 03:46 pm
That is just absurd….like the owner told the bull to go walk on the road….what if it had been a deer? Who would they sue then – the county for letting the deer roam free? !@#$%%^ I think people are just SUE happy….

This is an interesting story Butt I'm tired of hearing all the bull puns.

If you take posession of an animal then you are responsible for that animal, you can go to jail if you mistreat it.You Can be sued if it gets out and does damage...Bulls are not supposed to be in the road, their supposed to be in a pen.cars however are supposed to be on the road.no matter how fast....The deer theory...No one is in posession,or care or responsible for the animal..it can go freely from here to Canada. It is a free roaming animal... I know a guy who rents bulls and takes them to the Rodeo on Briggs street..They are transferred from one individual to another and that person is responsible for the care of the bulls.or he will be sued by the owner of the bulls..Now what entitles him to sue for damage to his bulls? because he owns, cares for them.Along with houses them.

I wonder if the steer was cited?
Despiser of Obama December 7, 2012 at 05:00 pm
Wrong no matter on how fast. That's way we have speed limit laws. It's ignorance and disregard to the law to speed and the cause of most accidents. Speed, speed who cares if there's a speed limit. It's all about me and how fast one wants to go. I guess the owner if the bill my hoof the bill.
Kathy Fergie December 7, 2012 at 05:27 pm
I bet the bull crapped.
Despiser of Obama December 7, 2012 at 05:29 pm
So did the driver.
nic December 7, 2012 at 07:39 pm
It's fine to say that the owner is responsible for the damage the animal causes.. such as, if the car had been parked. However, driving to fast and failure to avoid an accident is the driver's fault.
John Roberts December 8, 2012 at 02:36 pm
Well obviously there are speed limits..but if the guy was driving 30 or 50 he was allowed to be on the road and the bull was not...wow
John Roberts December 8, 2012 at 02:45 pm
So if the rodeo on briggs street has a bull get loose and you hit it..Your not going to sue?..Bullsh.. The first thing your going to do is sit there and wait for an ambulance.then your going to wear a neck brace and walk with a cane and sue the crap out of the rodeo...All of you are full of Bull... Your going to get your money you can..especially from a business...roads are for cars...not bulls....This is just like if your dog gets out and bites someone.or someone hits it because it ran out in front of them and damages their car....You were responsible for that animal and all the damages it caused..people have lost their houses, cars, and have their pay wages docked to pay for damages a dog did to someone...go a head let your animals out and see if you don't get sued for damages,..you know all of you would sue..out of a car, maybe job because you have no car,the pain your in from the accident...The only thing that would be going through all of your minds is how to sue the crap out of someone...if you own it you are responsible for it...Ask the farmers who's crops get damaged by someone else's animals how much money you can get...quite a bit they will tell you...$5000 for the car and 2 million for pain and suffering..like the lady who was rear ended $4000 for car and 1.6 million because she was scared to drive again....remember what state you live in.

Did anyone ask the bull "why it was crossing the street?"......
T-Bone December 9, 2012 at 02:50 pm
Oh Bullogna!
jono100 December 10, 2012 at 02:16 am
This was not the first time the bull was in the street...so why did the bull cross the road?
GenQuad4 December 18, 2012 at 02:01 pm

As a Commissioner, I would have liked to have seen a comparison of the budget that was presented inRead More our Board packets as a draft at a prior meeting compared to the draft that was put on the table before me at the last meeting so that I can see where the cuts took place. Spending down this year's contingency line items is like a sugar rush and will negatively affect the Park District's future. Prior Boards have been carrying over the contingency amounts from year to year in order to deal with unexpected expenses that inevitably come up. Just last week, the Administration Center was without a/c when the four units failed and needed to be replaced. Where did the funds come from to do that work? Its not as if the Board can go out and raise funds in the private market. That's what businesses CAN and should do, but then a park district is not a business. I resent the statements that prior Boards have been acting in a financially irresponsible manner. The Board has been operating a lean operation for many years.

I am just wondering how long this suspense filled soap opera will continue? Bottom line: HurtadoRead More knew his buddy needed a job...so; he and his majority board members made a mockery of local government due process and gave Mr. Peck a job, even though Hurtado voted with the past board to unanimously select an Exec…who is still under a contract. And then decided there was a need to pay a board secretary (who jumped out of the frying pan…smart move) and then appointed someone without pay. And of course there is a need to have a paid political hack to help publicly spin the board’s craziness via press releases.
AlaskaDreaming June 17, 2013 at 12:22 pm
I hate to ask the obvious of Mr. Peck (not that I expect him to answer anyway), but why is thisRead More announcement coming from the Executive Director rather than our newly appointed Director of Communications?
