Christmas Eve Fire Damages Plainfield Home

Officials said the blaze started in the dryer and got into the walls.

A dryer fire caused extensive damage to the second floor of a Plainfield home early Christmas Eve, according to Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton.

  • Stratton said the blaze is believed to have started in the lint trap in the dryer, located on the second floor of the home in the 24000 block of Commercial Street.

"The fire got inside the walls," Stratton said of the blaze, reported at around 7:30 a.m. "It actually ran behind the wall and into a bathroom area," where it continued burning beneath the second-floor bathroom's jacuzzi tub, he said.

Stratton said an inspector from the Village of Plainfield building department evaluated the home and determined it was safe the residents to stay, despite the damage to the second floor.

While there was significant damage to the home, Stratton said it could have been a lot worse.

"It would have been worse if [the homeowner] hadn't been home," he said. "It would have gone right up into the attic. That's why I always tell people, never leave your dryer running when you're not home."
