Counterfeit/Pirated DVDs Sold at Route 30 Plex Flea Market, Police Say

Acting on a tip, Plainfield police recovered more than 3,100 illegal DVDs valued at $7,800.

Plainfield police confiscated more than 3,100 counterfeit/pirated DVDs that were being sold at the flea market Saturday.

Detectives, acting on complaints that illegal DVDs were available for purchase at the 16300 S. Lincoln Highway business, bought 10 items from three different vendors, Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said Tuesday.

With the assistance of the department's patrol division, police were able to take possession of 3,127 counterfeit/pirated DVDs worth about $7,817 had they been sold, McQuaid said.

No arrests have been made, but two of the three suspects are known and have been interviewed, he said. At least one has been selling the fraudulent goods since the flea market opened in November, he said.

None of the suspects are from Plainfield, he said.

The discovery has led to a wider investigation, and police are working with the Motion Picture Association of America, McQuaid said.

The types of DVDs were of a "wide variety, a whole range" of different types, McQuaid said. It's possible the investigation will lead to the person or group responsible for making them, he said.
