Driver in Crash that Killed Motorcyclist was Intoxicated, Plainfield Police Say

David Dietrich was also charged with improper lane usage and driving without vehicle insurance in the Saturday collision.

The Shorewood man who killed a motorcyclist in a on Route 59 Saturday was drunk and uninsured at the time of the collision, said Sunday.

David C. Dietrich, 32, of 902 Bittersweet, has been charged with aggravated driving under the influence of alcohol, resulting in the death of another; driving under the influence; improper lane usage; driving too fast for conditions; and operating an uninsured motor vehichle.

The victim was George A. Weikum, 58, of Naperville, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Weikum was the owner of in Plainfield.

Police spent hours Saturday night reconstructing the accident that occurred between 135th and 143rd streets, near the store and not far from Weikum's 12006 Spaulding School Drive business.

According to police reports, Dietrich was driving his 2005 Ford Ranger pickup truck southbound on Route 59 when he lost control, struck the center median and rolled into the northbound lane of traffic. His truck struck Weikum as he drove his 2010 Harley Davidson motorcycle.

Dietrich was transported to Provena St. Joseph Medical Center in Joliet, where he was treated for injuries. Police took him into custody on Sunday when he was released from the hospital.

He remains held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
