Drunk Driving Crackdown Nets 10 Arrests

Plainfield one of many towns to participate in state program to stop DUIs over the days before and during the Labor Day weekend.

Ten tipsy drivers got a buzz kill during late-night Labor Day celebrations.

The impaired driving crackdown, from Aug. 20 through Sept. 6, brings new meaning to the term "long weekend." Plainfield police arrested 10 motorists for drunk driving during this period, all of them after midnight. County and state cops awarded three more DUIs at a roadside safety check at 119th Street and Route 59.

The crackdown cost $1.5 million statewide in "outreach" and extra badges. You have to wonder if it was worth it. The Plainfield PD generally issues three or four DUIs a week, said Sgt. Eric Munson, Plainfield's traffic officer.
