Family Escapes Plainfield Fire

A cat was taken to the vet after the early morning fire.

Smoke detectors alerted a family of four to an early morning fire Wednesday in the 24100 block of Hillcrest Drive in Plainfield.

Deputy Fire Chief Jon Stratton said the blaze was reported around 5:58 a.m. after the smoke alarm woke a mother, father and their two sons.

The family was also able to get several pets out of the one-story home. Stratton said firefighters did find one cat inside the house and brought the animal outside to be revived. The cat was taken to a local veterinarian, but Stratton did not know its condition.

He said investigators are working on determining the cause of the blaze, which started in the back porch area and spread though the home, including into the attic.

Stratton said the Red Cross was en route to the home to determine whether the family is in need of assistance. He said the fire caused "significant damage" to the house.
