Fire Destroys Garage, Damages House

The blaze started in the garage, but the source is still under investigation, Joliet Fire Capt. Dave House said.

A couple lost their detached garage and a Jeep inside in a late Tuesday afternoon fire, the source of which is still under investigation.

The fire at 6901 W. Grantham Drive was detected shortly after 5 p.m., and required about 16 to get it under control within a half hour, Capt. Dave House said Tuesday night.

While the damage was contained to Mark and Kimberly Guido's garage, the heat was strong enough to peel the siding from their home.

Mark Guido, who was on the scene as firefighters put out the fire and with investigators as they combed through the ruins, said he did not know the source of the fire but speculated it could have been the Jeep. He and his wife have owned the house for six years, he said.

The garage is considered a total loss, and House pegged the total damage at about $30,000.

An investigator on the scene said the Jeep would be towed for further examination. Because the garage roof had collapsed, the building will likely be demolished quickly, he said.
