Fire in Vacant Townhome Unit Displaces Neighbors: Plainfield Fire Dept.

Plumbing work may have been to blame for the fire, officials said.

An attic fire in a townhome unit undergoing renovations spread to the next dwelling, leaving a family of five temporarily displaced.

Plainfield Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said firefighters responded to a fire at around 3:24 p.m. in the 2300 block of Carnation in Crest Hill.

Stratton said investigators believe plumbers sweating pipes in an upstairs bathroom in the vacant unit may have started the blaze, which spread to the attic of the adjacent unit.

"All of the fire was contained to the attic area," Stratton said. The Lockport Fire Protection District assisted in fighting the fire, he said.

The blaze caused significant damage, displacing two adults and three children in the neighboring unit, he said. Stratton said the Red Cross was called in to assist the family, and relatives were also helping the displaced residents.

Two other homes in the four-unit building remained habitable, Stratton said. No one was hurt in the fire.
