Five Arrested After Plainfield Shooting; Police Say Drugs, Alcohol Were a Factor

Police responded to the home in the 24000 block of George Washington Drive at around 10:44 a.m. for a report of a disturbance/shooting that erupted between tenants in two different units, police said Monday.

Police said the incident was drug and alcohol related, and two of the five who were arrested face drug-related charges.

The man who was shot, 23-year-old Jeffrey Walsh, was wanted on a warrant for a battery charge filed in February at the time of the incident. He was transported to Rush-Copley Hospital in Aurora for treatment, then taken into custody by Plainfield police, according to Sgt. Mike Fisher. Walsh is a resident of the townhome and has prior arrests for domestic battery, battery, retail theft and DUI, according to Will County records. 

The person who shot Walsh, according to police, is a 17-year-old juvenile. He is charged with aggravated battery, as well as manufacture/delivery of cannabis, police said.

Fisher said the accused shooter was also charged with aggravated robbery in connection with an incident earlier in the morning on 143rd Street near Van Dyke Road. In that incident, which occurred sometime around 3 or 4 a.m., the teen allegedly stole cash and a cell phone from a man he spotted walking down the street, according to police. The man told police he was the victim of a strong-arm robbery, Fisher said, adding there is no indication a weapon was displayed in the robbery.

Police said they were able to identify the teen as the robbery suspect based on the victim's description of him and the vehicle allegedly used in the crime.

Raymond Villa, 22, of the 12000 block of Stellar Lane in Plainfield, was also arrested in connection with Monday's disturbance on George Washington Drive, along with a second 17-year-old juvenile. Both were charged with battery, police said.

Amber K. Humphrey, 20, of the 3000 block of Woodside Drive in Joliet, was also arrested following the incident and charged with possession of cannabis.

Another woman was taken into custody at the time of the incident, but released without charges, according to Fisher.

Police had the area surrounding the home cordoned off for about three hours following the shooting.

"This incident began with an intense emergency response to a potentially deadly situation," Fisher said in a press release. " However, it resulted in the immediate and safe apprehension of several offenders who were subsequently brought to justice. They were not only brought to justice regarding this disturbance/shooting, but through further investigation and interview the second juvenile was linked to and identified as the offender in a robbery that occurred several hours earlier."
