Gas Leak Shuts Down Plainfield Post Office

Area near post office on Van Dyke closed for two hours.

A construction crew working on a piece of property adjacent to the Plainfield post office, 14855 S. Van Dyke Rd., struck a gas line Thursday afternoon, prompting the shutdown of the post office.

Plainfield Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. The post office and roadway were shut down as Nicor sent a crew out to repair the leak, according to Stratton.

While there was a strong odor, Stratton said, readings showed minimal levels of gas inside the post office, which reopened after about two hours.
