A construction crew working on a piece of property adjacent to the Plainfield post office, 14855 S. Van Dyke Rd., struck a gas line Thursday afternoon, prompting the shutdown of the post office.
Plainfield Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said the incident happened around 4:30 p.m. The post office and roadway were shut down as Nicor sent a crew out to repair the leak, according to Stratton.
While there was a strong odor, Stratton said, readings showed minimal levels of gas inside the post office, which reopened after about two hours.
Stratton said emergency crews also monitored the situation at two nearby senior communities, Cedarlake Village and Heritage Woods, and found that there was no danger to residents.
