Girlfriend Choked after Obtaining Protection Order: Police

Robin Rufus is also charged with domestic battery for shoving the victim's mother, who tried to intervene, Joliet police said.

A man tried to choke his live-in girlfriend only minutes after she returned from the Will County Courthouse with an order of protection against him, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

Robin L. Rufus, 36, has been charged with aggravated domestic battery, aggravated battery, domestic battery and knowingly damaging property in connection with the incident, which took place at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at the couple's 6213 Southridge Drive home, near Caton Farm and Drauden roads.

The victim told police Rufus came at her just as she returned home, and that she was unable to keep him from coming into the house after her, Roechner said. She fled to a bedroom where her mother was and closed the door, but Rufus allegedly kicked the door in, he said.

He then pushed the mother out of the way and began choking his girlfriend, Roechner said. When the mother tried to intervene, Rufus allegedly threw her over the bed, he said.

The mother was able to call police, and he was arrested at the house, Roechner said.

Because Rufus had not yet been served with the order of protection, he could not be charged with violating it, he said.
