Woman Charged with Felony After Incident at Plainfield Hallmark: Police

Joliet's Cynthia M. Volpi is taken into custody after returning to the scene of an alleged incident and being recognized by a store employee, police say.

A Joliet woman who allegedly stole five Yankee-brand candles from Amy's Hallmark on Route 59 in Plainfield returned to the scene of the incident, was recognized by an employee and then taken into custody by Joliet police on a retail theft felony charge, according to Capt. Tab Jensen.

Cynthia M. Volpi, 52, of 1708 Prairie Wind, Joliet, took five Yankee candles valued at $130 on her first visit to Amy's Hallmark, 2306 Route 59, Plainfield, at 4:50 p.m. on Oct. 11, according to Jensen.

Then, when she returned to the store the next day—Oct. 12—she was recognized by an employee.

"That's when we were called and she was arrested," Jensen said.

Volip was taken into custody at 6:34 p.m. on Oct. 12 and charged as a felon because of her previous arrest history, Jensen said.

According to Will County Sheriff's Office records, Volpi first was charged with burglary and threat of a theft with a firearm in September of 2009. She was awaiting a court appearance on Friday to determine the amount of her bond.
