Antonio Rivera, 34, 4602 S. Fairfield Ave., Chicago, faces burglary and retail theft charges in connection with the incident, which occurred shortly before noon at the 11840 S. Route 59 store.
A store clerk watched Rivera stealing the merchandise and then followed him out as he left, Detective Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said. When she saw he was headed to a nearby Kohl’s store, she called the police.
Officers apprehended Rivera as he left the department store and were able to recover the stolen CVS merchandise, McQuaid said.
Rivera was also arrested on an outstanding warrant issued by the Schaumburg Police Department for retail theft, he said.
While it’s unusual to charge someone with burglary in addition to retail theft, the Will County state’s attorney’s office made the decision based on the belief that Rivera went into the store with the intention of committing a theft, McQuaid said.
Rivera being held in the Will County jail pending a bond hearing.
