Man Chokes, Throws Ex-Girlfriend Down Stairs, Police Say

Nicholas Pay is alleged to have attacked the woman after she refused to resume their romantic relationship, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

A  man allegedly headbutted, choked and threw his former girlfriend down a flight of stairs Tuesday when the woman refused to resume their romantic relationship, Joliet Police Cmdr. Al Roechner said.

  • The victim told police she and Nicholas Pay, 22, of 4514 Mallard Lane in Plainfield, had recently broken up after dating for a year and a half, Roechner said. When Pay asked to come over to her 1082 Cathy Drive home to discuss their relationship, she agreed. However, when she refused his request to get back together, a physical fight ensued, Roechner said.


    According to the victim, Pay elbowed her in the chest and then pushed her down a flight of stairs, he said. He then grabbed her by the throat to choke her before butting her head with his, he said.

    Pay was arrested at his home, which is located in Joliet but has a Plainfield mailing address, at about 6:40 p.m. He was charged with battery and aggravated battery.

    Pay was booked into the Will County jail and released on $4,000 bail.
