Man Dies After Van Strikes Tree Near Plainfield

It's unclear whether the man was killed in the crash or died from medical conditions, police said.

The cause of death for a man whose van left the roadway and struck a tree has yet to be determined, police said Tuesday afternoon.

Joliet Cmdr. Al Roechner said the man, identified by the Will County Coroner's Office as 56-year-old David Herrera of Joliet, was driving south on Wesmere Parkway at around 2 p.m. when his GMC Sierra left the road and struck a tree just north of Twin Lakes Court.

Herrera was pronounced dead at 2:34 p.m. at the Presence St. Joseph Medical Center ER, the coroner said.

Roechner said it's unclear whether the crash killed Herrera, or whether his death was the result of a medical emergency. Roechner said Herrera's sister arrived on the scene after the crash, telling police that he had undergone a heart transplant in November and suffered from medical conditions.

Roechner said it did not look like Herrera made any attempt to stop the van before it struck the tree.

No one else was in the van at the time of the crash, police said.
