NIU Safety Course Spurred by Slaying of Plainfield Student

Organizers say the program is also a way to honor Antinette "Toni" Keller, who was killed last October in a park near the campus, DeKalb newspaper reports.

A course that provides insight on how to keep safe will be held in November in honor of a Northern Illinois University student killed nearly a year ago in a DeKalb park.

A Refuse to be a Victim seminar has been scheduled for Nov. 1 at the DeKalb Elks 765 Lodge in honor of .

Keller, a freshman from Plainfield, was last seen Oct. 14 on the NIU campus when she told friends she intended to take a walk in Prairie Park. Burned remains were found in the park Oct. 16, and it took forensic analysts about a week to determine they were human. In January, authorities said the remains had been positively identified through DNA testing as those of Keller.
