A woman was taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital in critical condition Saturday following a head-on crash on Route 126 at 143rd Street.
Chief Jon Stratton said the woman was heading east on Main Street/Route 126 in a Nissan Sentra at around 6:51 a.m. when a westbound Nissan Altima crossed over and hit her vehicle head on.
The male driver of the Altima was taken to Adventist hospital in fair condition, Stratton said. There were no other occupants in the vehicles.
Illinois State Police Sgt. Martez Malone said the drivers' injuries did not appear life threatening.
The driver of the Altima told police he thought he might have fallen asleep at the wheel, Malone said. As of Saturday afternoon, no citations had been issued in the crash, police said.
Stratton said Main Street/Route 126 was down to one lane for about half an hour following the crash, with assisting with traffic control.
Stratton said while there have been numerous serious crashes on Route 126 in recent months, the intersection at 143rd Street, located east of Route 59, isn't a particularly treacherous one.
"It's actually a straight area and an open shot [with] good visibility," he said.
