Plainfield Board Considers Route 59/Lockport Street Dunkin’ Donuts, Huge Facility Expansion

Steel fabricator Coilplus is proposing a 76,000-square-foot addition; meanwhile, a developer wants to bring a Dunkin' Donuts to Lockport Street/Route 59

A vacant corner at Route 59 and Lockport Street could become home to new businesses, if village board members like a proposal to build a stand-alone Dunkin Donuts and a mixed-use building on the site.

The land, located at the southwest corner, has been vacant since 2004, when the old First Baptist Church of Plainfield was torn down. The church, which was purchased by developer Carl Bryant, had outgrown the aging building thanks to increased membership, church officials said at the time.

Since then, the location has sat largely unused, with the exception of the annual Plainfield Farmers Market.

Now, a proposal is on the table to bring a Dunkin’ Donuts and a mixed-use building to the site. The proposal comes more than a year after Bryant worked unsuccessfully to bring a new Dunkin’ location to another vacant Plainfield storefront.

On Monday, village staff is seeking input from the board on the proposal. It’s not clear when the issue could come before the board for a vote.

Coilplus expansion

Trustees will vote Monday on a proposal for a 76,000-square-foot addition at Coilplus of Illinois, 14023 S. Coilplus Dr. The board is scheduled to vote on the site plan review for the project.

“It’s a major, major expansion,” village planner Michael Garrigan said. When finished, the steel processing plant would be more than 250,000 square feet, he added.

The village board will also vote on the company’s request for a five-year, 50 percent property tax abatement for the addition. Last week, the Plainfield School District 202 Board of Education OK’ed the tax abatement.

“The abatement is for the expansion only,” said Angie Smith, assistant superintendent for business and operations for District 202.

Smith said the addition won’t immediately bring new jobs to Plainfield, but could mean increased shifts for Coilplus staffers.

Garrigan said Coilpus has been in Plainfield for more than 30 years, with clients including Toyota and various appliance manufacturers. “They’ve never laid anyone off, which is amazing,” he said.

A representative of Coilplus did not return messages from Patch.

New McDonald’s on the agenda

Trustees will also vote on a site plan for a new McDonald’s restaurant in the Rose development at Route 30 and 135th Street.

The franchisee is also seeking a special use permit for a drive-thru at the location.

Mayor Michael Collins touted the new McDonald’s as one of the many new businesses coming to Plainfield in 2013 during his State of the Village address in January.
