Police Ticket Hundreds for Seat Belt Violations

A crackdown conducted between Aug. 19 and Sept. 5 also netted four DUI arrests and a slew of other violations.

Nearly 440 people received tickets for seat belt violations over a two-week crackdown conducted by the in connection with the Labor Day holiday.

In addition to the 439 occupant restraint citations, the department -- funded with a grant from the Illinois Department of Transportation -- also made four drunken driving arrests between Aug. 19 and Sept. 5.

The department conducted a roadside safety check on Sept. 3 at Route 59 near Joseph Street where these citations were issued:

14 for operating an uninsured motor vehicle;

4 for violating the Child Passenger Safety Act;

1 for illegal transportation of alcohol;

3 for no valid driver's license;

1 for allowing an unauthorized person to drive.

The totals do no include arrests made by the Will County Sheriff's Department and the Illinois State Police, which assisted with the roadside check. In all, 270 cars were stopped at the checkpoint, according to Plainfield Traffic Sgt. Eric Munson.
