Plainfield Hosts Citizen's Police and Fire Academy, Explorer Program

Police and fire academy kicks off Feb. 14; explorer program begins with an informational meeting on Feb. 6.

Want to know more about crime scene processing or how firefighters get people out of a vehicle after a crash?

As part of a program launched by Plainfield Police Chief John Konopek and Fire Chief John Eichelberger, residents who live in and around the Village of Plainfield and Plainfield Fire Protection District can sign up for the 11th session of the Plainfield Citizen's Police and Fire Academy for winter/spring 2013.

The nine-week program is offered from 7 to 9 p.m. on consecutive Thursdays, beginning Feb. 14, at various locations in the Village of Plainfield.

Classes are taught by personnel from the Plainfield police, fire and ambulance departments, and include both lectures and hands-on instruction.

Class size is limited to the first 30 students to register; any additional residents will be placed on a waiting list. Registration deadline is 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8.

Applications are available for pickup at the Plainfield Police Department, 14300 S. Coil Plus Dr., during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, or online by clicking here.

Explorer program

The Plainfield Police Department is also seeking applicants for the Police Explorer Program, open to men and women between the ages of 14 and 20.

The program is a great opportunity for those who intend to pursue a career in law enforcement. It training in the day-to-day activities of a police officer, strengthens leadership skills and helps participants prepare for a future in law enforcement.

To be eligible, participants must complete an application, pass a background check, have parental permission and attend an informational meeting from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Applications are available at the Plainfield Police Department during regular business hours. High school students may also pick them up from their school resource officers. 

The deadline to apply is Feb. 4.
