  • Pace spokesman Patrick Wilmot said the crash involving route 855 happened on I-55 between First Avenue and Harlem around 7:30 a.m. when another bus entered the shoulder and struck the bus near the front door.

"Our bus was on the shoulder at the time, operating within the guidelines of the program," Wilmot said, adding officials haven't yet determined what caused the other bus to enter the shoulder.

The door of the bus had to be removed to allow passengers to exit. Three riders suffered minor injuries and were taken to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, according to a spokesman for the Illinois State Police.

Two Pace routes originating in Plainfield — 755 and 855 — are authorized to use the shoulder as part of a program aimed at increasing ridership.

Wilmot said all passengers were transferred to the next Pace bus following the crash, and the scene was cleared by 8:15 a.m.

State police said the crash remains under investigation.
