Police: Radar Clocks Teen Driving 108 mph on Route 59

A school resource officer running radar during spring break gave the fastest speeding ticket of his career, according to police reports.

A Plainfield teen driving at 108 mph down Route 59 Tuesday afternoon was a “great risk” to other drivers, police say.

“Other motorists would never suspect a vehicle (was) traveling so fast and may change lanes or pull out from a side street or private drive directly into the path of the speeding vehicle, resulting in a catastrophic collision,” Traffic Sgt. Eric Munson said in a press release.

Police radar showed the 17-year-old Plainfield boy was racing south at 108 mph on the main thoroughfare about 1:47 p.m. Tuesday, according to reports. The teen, whose name is not being released because he is a juvenile, could get as much as a year in jail, a $2,500 fine and lose his license for driving 63 mph faster than the posted 45-mph speed limit north of 135th Street.

“At 108 mph, the offending vehicle traveled at over 158 feet per second, whereas a vehicle obeying the speed limit of 45 mph would be traveling at approximately 66 feet per second,” Munson said in the release.

Police said Plainfield Officer Troy Miller, the school resource officer at Plainfield Central High School, was running radar Tuesday because schools are closed for spring break. It was the fastest speeding citation he’s issued in his eight years with the Plainfield Police Department, according to the release.
