Rt. 59 Speeders Target of Today's Awareness Day

Police will be "aggressively" cracking down on people driving over the speed limit on the street where most of the village's bad accidents occur.

Today's Speed Awareness Day on Route 59 in Plainfield, meaning there will be no getting out of speeding tickets if you see red lights flashing in your rear-view mirror.

The event is held in conjunction with Faces4.org, a nonprofit group dedicated to educating the public to the dangers of speeding.

Plainfield Traffic Sgt. Eric Munson said the village's accident statistics bear out the group's point: Nearly a third of all injury accidents in 2010 were speed-related; seven of the top 10 crash locations are on Route 59; and nearly half of all crashes occur on Route 59.

The will be "aggressively" enforcing the speed limit all day Wednesday, with the help of the Illinois State Police and the Will County Sheriff's Department, Munson said. There will also be signs on display warning of the dangers of speeding and informational literature distributed.

Thank you, I was wondering what the signs were for while driving home from work yesterday. I hope they start working on the some of the other streets as well.

What I find amusing is that there is a sign ordinance prohibiting the very signs they put up en masse.
