[UPDATED] Severe Thunderstorm Warning, Air Quality Alert in Effect

Storms could sweep through the Plainfield area Saturday afternoon and evening, potentially producing strong winds, hail and heavy rainfall.

A severe storm warning for Will County was cancelled around 4:45 p.m. Saturday.

Chief John Konopek said damages were minor in Plainfield, save for some downed tree limbs and a fallen cable line.

"We didn't get it too bad," he said.

As of 5 p.m., Indian Boundary Road was closed near Poppy Lane was police waited for a crew from a cable company to arrive and repair the downed wire.

Konopek said no other roads were closed in Plainfield.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect in the area until 4:45 p.m. Saturday, with a period of showers and storms between 4 and 7 p.m.

The National Weather Service warns that storms could move into the area Saturday afternoon and evening. The storms could produce wind gusts up to 70 mph and quarter-size hail, along with heavy rainfall.

Heat indices Saturday afternoon could reach or exceed 100 degrees, according to a hazardous weather outlook issued by the National Weather Service.

The Environmental Protection Agency of Illinois is also forecasting unhealthy air quality across the Chicago metro area. An air quality alert is in affect until midnight.

The National Weather Service also issued a flash flood warning for counties including Will, Kendall and DuPage, citing reports of more than two inches of rain falling in less than 30 minutes in some areas. The flood warning is in effect until 6 p.m.
