Smoke Detectors Save Family from Early Morning Fire: Officials

Home is inhabitable, but a garage and three vehicles were destroyed in the blaze.

A family and their dog escaped a fire that destroyed their garage and three vehicles early Sunday in the 15000 block of Dan Patch Drive, according to the Plainfield Fire Protection District.

Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said firefighters got a call about the garage fire at around 4:47 a.m. He said smoke detectors alerted the mother, father and son to the fire, and they were able to get out of the home along with their dog.

A firewall stopped the blaze from spreading to the home, Stratton said.

"It was all contained to the garage," he said. "We turned the home back over to them, but the garage was a total loss," along with the three vehicles inside, Stratton said.

"The smoke detector woke them up," he said. "That's what saved them."
