Two Men Injured in Three-Car Route 59 Crash

Details on how the head-on collision occurred were not available Friday, but the injuries could have been far more serious were it not for airbags, deputy fire chief says.

Two men were transported to the hospital Friday afternoon following a head-on collision on Route 59, just north of 135th Street.

One victim, listed in stable condition, was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center in Aurora; the other was taken to for observation, Deputy Chief Jon Stratton said.

The accident occurred near the entrances to and sometime after 4:30 p.m., Stratton said. He wasn't certain how the accident occurred, but three cars  -- a 2001 Honda Civic, 2002 Chevy Malibu and a 2001 Infinity G20 -- were involved, two of which sustained "heavy damage," he said.

Had it not been for airbags, the injuries would have been far more severe, Stratton said. The driver of the third car declined medical treatment.

Stratton said he did not have IDs on the victims, other than all three were men. are investigating the accident.
