Drug Sweep Nets Man Carrying Kilo of Pure Heroin

Plainfield police officers took part in the bust, which was carried out by the Will County Police Assistance Team.

A drug sweep conducted by the Will County Police Assistance Team, which includes officers from Plainfield, led to the arrest of a Des Plaines man carrying a kilo of pure heroin with an estimated street value of $240,000.

The team arrested Tomas Macendo-Campuzano, 28, on Monday night just outside the Westfield Louis Joliet Mall in Joliet, according to a news release issued Tuesday. He was charged with possession of heroin, possession of heroin with intent to deliver and calculated criminal drug conspiracy.

Police said Macendo-Campuzano was intercepted en route to Chicago.

A drug enforcement team, made up of officers from the FBI, Illinois State Police, and the Joliet, Plainfield and Romeoville police departments, set up their drug enforcement detail at Interstate 55 and U.S. 30, the release said.

According to team Director Jamal Simington, “This substantial seizure will have a direct impact on the quality of life in communities where this highly addictive drug was destined. The investigation will continue in order to identify those responsible for the distribution of this substance.”

Macendo-Campuzano was booked into the Will County Adult Detention Center.
