Will County Man Granted Clemency from Gov. Quinn

Illinois' governor is working his way through a backlog of clemency petitions.

Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn on Good Friday granted clemency to 87 petitioners.

According to the governor’s website, the petitions granted are part of a backlog of some 2,500 cases up for review. Quinn also denied clemency for 135 petitioners last week.

In Will County, Quinn granted clemency for Steven Garrett, who was charged with unlawful discharge of a firearm in 1993.

Perhaps the most notable of this recent round of clemency petitions was that for an abused wife accused of killing her husband in 1986. Peggy Jo Jackson had spent 26 years in prison for killing William Jackson, according to the Chicago Tribune.

She was released from Logan Correction Facility on Friday, the Tribune reported.
