Workshop to Help People Avoid Foreclosure Set for Oct. 26

The event, being held at Lewis University in Romeoville, is sponsored by Joliet's General Assembly representatives and others.

A workshop on how to stave off foreclosure, sponsored by state Sens. Pat McGuire (D-Joliet) and Jennifer Bertino-Tarrant (D-Shorewood), is being held Oct. 26 at Lewis University in Romeoville.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the school's Building 11, located on the Route 53 campus at 1 University Parkway. State Reps. Natalie Manley (D-Joliet), Tom Cross (R-Oswego), Larry Walsh Jr. (D-Joliet) and Emily McAsey (D-Romeoville) will be co-hosting the event.

Nearly 50 workshops of this kind have been held throughout Illinois since 2009 as an initiative of The Mortgage Relief Project, according to a news release on the event.

MRP is a part of the Illinois Foreclosure Prevention Network and is dedicated to providing information and resources that can help homeowners take advantage of programs to lower their mortgages, avoid foreclosure and keep their homes, the release said.

The agency also provides information on legal rights, credit counseling and avoiding scam artists, the release said. In addition, homeowners can also take advantage of private, one-on-one housing counseling with HUD-certified counselors during the workshop.

“The Illinois Mortgage Relief Project is providing a tremendous service to the people of Illinois,” said Sen. Bertino-Tarrant. “This workshop is in high demand all over the state and I am glad we were able to bring it to the people of Will and Kendall counties.”
