State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, is reportedly eyeing a run for state treasurer, and on Thursday, his colleagues in the Illinois House of Representatives elected his replacement as House Republican Leader.

Rep. Jim Durkin, R-Western Springs, was chosen to replace Cross.

“We are unified, excited and ready to get to work,” Durkin said in a statement. “GOP members from the north, south, east and west share a common vision for necessary fiscal reforms for the state and adding more members to the Illinois House Republican Caucus.”

The race for leader came down to a choice between Durkin and Rep. Raymond Poe (R-Springfield).

“I’ve known Ray for many years and he has my utmost respect as a colleague, and I look forward to having a solid working relationship with him moving forward,” Durkin said.

Durkin also thanked Cross for his years of services and commitment to the caucus.

Cross has served as the GOP leader since 2003. He is expected to announce his candidacy for treasurer within weeks.

“Leader Cross should be commended for his work and dedication to the Illinois House Republicans,” Durkin said. “I wish him the best on his future endeavors.”

Durkin, 52, previously served as the assistant minority leader in the Illinois House of Representatives. He has served in the 82nd District since 2006.

Durkin also served in the Illinois House of Representatives from 1995 through 2002 until he became the Republican nominee for United States Senate.

He is a former assistant Cook County state's attorney and former assistant Illinois attorney general. He is currently a partner in the Governmental and Municipal Affairs practice group Arnstain and Lehr LLP.

Durkin is a resident of Western Springs, where he lives with his wife and four children.
