Letter to the Editor: Make Informed Decision and Vote

Plainfield School Board member Michael Kelly urges readers to learn about the candidates and not be swayed by blogs or rumors.

As we go into Tuesday's election, I want to remind everyone to get out and vote. And make your voice heard.

This really is an important election. Please don’t make your decision just on what you have read in the blogs or in the rumor mill. Make an informed decision on who is going to move Plainfield schools forward in a way that works for all of the children who arrive at the Plainfield School District 202’s door each and every school day.

The school district has had to make some really difficult decisions over the last couple of years. Funding for education in Illinois is a mess. If you read the papers, you know that the state of Illinois has lots of work to do to right the ship.

District 202 has been hugely impacted by that funding and the economy. The decisions the district has been forced to make have been unpopular both with the board and our public. That is the very reason why you want people on the board of education who have an agenda for kids and not some political agenda or to satisfy some small group of people. What is important is that we work for all of our students so that they can be successful citizens. So much of what I have read over the past several weeks is so off the mark in reaching that goal.

Please know the candidates and make an informed decision on who can fulfill your goals as a parent or community member. The Patch and the Herald News have published profiles of each candidate and presented questions that each have answered.

Whether it is the school board election or a municipal election, the people elected will have a greater effect on your daily life than much of what happens on the national scene.

Please, get out and make your voice heard by voting on Tuesday. Don’t let someone else make these important choices for you. Voting is not just a right, it is just as much a responsibility.

Very sincerely,

Michael Kelly

Plainfield School District 202 board member
