Manley: Cut Legislative Pay by 10 Percent

State representative candidate also supports law requiring voter approval for legislative pay raises.

Editor’s note: The following was taken in part from a press release issued by Natalie Manley’s campaign.

A Joliet Democrat is promising to do her part to help solve the state’s budget crisis by voting to cut legislative salaries by 10 percent.

Natalie Manley, who is facing off against Republican in the race for the 98th District State Representative seat, also said she supports new legislation requiring voters to approval all pay raises for lawmakers.

“The state has a serious budget problem,” Manley said. “As I walk door-to-door, I meet many taxpayers who are struggling to make ends meet and who can barely afford the roof over their heads while paying for gasoline and groceries. The politicians who got us into this mess don’t deserve a raise, and they should share the burden.”

Manley said she also supports eliminating legislative perks that will put the state further in debt, including ending free taxpayer-funded healthcare for retired politicians and judges who already receive state-funded pensions.

The candidate has vowed to work to repeal the state income tax hike.

“As a single mother who got out of an abusive marriage, I put myself through college and worked two jobs on the night shift in order to provide for my family,” continued Manley. “I’ve made it through some tough times by working hard and that’s what it’s going to take to get out of the mess the politicians in Springfield have created.  It’s wrong for politicians to keep asking taxpayers to bail them out, when they should be making some sacrifices just like we are.  I am determined to fight for fairness and to use my accounting and auditing skills to help balance the budget, improve the economy and create jobs.”

Manley’s bid for the state representative seat is her first run for office. She works as an accountant and  is one of the hosts of WJOL’s “Lynne, Mary & Natalie” show.

I am all for the changes you plan to make, and if you push for these measures, you'll have my vote. Illinois State Government: Governor Quinn and the Legislature are the SECOND HIGHEST PAID OFFICIALS in the United States, while our Justices are the THIRD HIGHEST PAID. What other job allows you to be paid a FULL PENSION and BENEFITS after only ONE year of service? What other job allows it's workers to vote and approve their own salary increases and benefits??? Only Illinois....Yet, our Illinois Governor and Legislature continue to try and take away retired teachers and state workers salaries and insurance and close down much needed facilities for our special needs populations. Absolutely, Illinois State Government has made a mess of our state's finances, with no end in sight. It is time for new leadership!

It's my understanding that Manley have the support of Michael Madigan behind her. If that's true, and she Madigan's lead, I don't see how things will change. We need good independents to run, not attached to any party platforms, to get the revisions in state government that are needed.
Chris September 12, 2012 at 04:42 PM
Bob, if that is true, there will be no change at all. Maybe Natalie could come out and disavow any connection or support from Madigan?
Bob Jonas September 12, 2012 at 05:23 PM
Chris, that would encourage people who are frustrated with the current regime to vote for her. I hope she is truly an independent Democrat and will place in her campaign literature and her speeches that she is not a Madigan flunky.
Ray September 12, 2012 at 05:53 PM
She was escorted around my subdivision by our HOA President and I specifically mentioned Mike Madigan in an unflattering series of remarks and she did not respond. Maybe I should have asked her how she feels about assault and battery?
Ray September 12, 2012 at 05:56 PM
Oh I forgot to mention the HOA president moved out here from Chicago and is a big union and machine political supporter. Sorry, but if you're voting for Natalie you're most likely voting for more of what got this state in the mess it is in. In my opinion the only way any of us are going to see better state government in our lifetime's is to move to another state.

Natalie Manley is making it her top priority to communicate with voters directly, and listen to our feedback so that she can represent us in Springfield --- not any party leader or other politician. She is meeting with people face-to-face, and wants our vote and our endorsement. All while her opponent is soliciting the support from incumbent mayors, county board members, and politicians, how is that going to help us? (he has an article about his endorsements from politicians on patch today!) As a certified public accountant, Natalie Manley understands that we need serious budget and spending reform. At a time when many families are struggling, Natalie has pledged to cut legislator pay, block lawmaker salary increases and passing a law making it more difficult for legislators to raise their own pay. She does not support tax increases. We need more dedicated, independent-thinking, financial professionals like Natalie Manley in Springfield and I am proud to support her.
Chris September 12, 2012 at 11:52 PM
So John, she would be willing to disavow any connection or support from Madigan? If so, I might be interested. Without that, your words ring hollow.

This proposal is simply a distraction from the real issues. Tell me how she will be able to get the votes in the house and senate to pass such a proposal? That bill will never see the light of day.
Ray September 13, 2012 at 05:50 PM
I agree tinfoil. John if you weren't supporting her my guess is she could sue you for copyright infringment since your post reads very much like, if not identical to, the card I got in the mail for her campaign a few weeks ago. @ Chris I agree. If she has no connection to Madigan what John posted sounds very nice. Then again so did Judy Biggert calling for term limits. She's been in there how long now? 20 years?

"As a single mother who got out of an abusive marriage," just tugs at the heart strings of America... Really what does that have to do with poltical capital, does it make you "more" qualified? balancing the budget, hard working fiscal responsibility.. Is she trying to tell us she's running as a "conservative?" Dems will say "ANYTHING" to get elected. If she's so responsible why run as a Dem...
Chris September 13, 2012 at 08:23 PM
Uh oh... I was just reasearching her a little more - trying to figure out where she is coming from. Found out she was arrested earlier this year for assault. Enough for me.
Ray September 13, 2012 at 08:25 PM
She should not be commenting on or using her domestic abuse issues in her campaign as she was recently arrested for abusing/assaulting her daughter. You can't have it both ways.
Tim September 13, 2012 at 08:29 PM
Is there any reason that you can't provide the evidence to support your claim? You made the claim, so it is now on you to prove it, not on those you accuse to prove its opposite.
Bob Jonas September 14, 2012 at 01:44 AM
Tim, if the claim is not true, all Ms. Manley has to do is say she is not being supported by Madigan and the Democratic Party. Without Madigan and the Democratic Party support she would not have the funds to run a campaign and send out a new full colored piece of literature almost every day. She keeps saying she will cut representative pay by 10%, balance the budget because she is a CPA, etc. None of this will happen unless she has the support of the majority of the other reps in Springfield. She will be a rookie that gets eaten up by the vultures who are already instilled in Springfield. I work with a lot of CPA's who are not very good and are more harmful to their business clients then helpful.

If you go through the State Board of Elections you see a significant amount of in-kind contributions from the Illinois Democrat Party. All her mailers are labeled paid by the Illinois Democrat Party. Madigan is the Chairman of the Illinois Democrat Party and he is the one that funnels all the money to these targeted state rep races. Any vote for a IL Democrat is a vote for Madigan. Good luck in cutting his pay!
Ray September 18, 2012 at 10:30 PM
Ron I think Jean answered your question to Bob. I also think that if Natalie's mailers say paid for by the Illinois Democratic party on them it is completely unnecessary to go the the State Board of Elections and check anything. We know where the money came from, who signed off on it, and who she's going to be beholding to. Thanks Jean. Great post!
