Plainfield Library Handing Out Free Books

The giveaway is part of a larger campaign -- World Book Night -- designed to encourage a love of reading.

librarians will participate in World Book Night tonight by going into the community to distribute free books.

The annual event is designed to spread a love of reading and books, and similar free book giveaways are being conducted internationally, according to the World Book Night Web site. The event originated last year in Britain.

The 's Outreach Department will be going throughout town, including local gyms, food pantries, restaurants, and at the Pace bus stop near Village Hall.

Among the books being handed out are The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot, and The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, which have been donated by publishers, printers and paper companies. All 30 authors involved have waived their royalties.
