Plainfield Parks Candidates Withdraw from Race Amid Objections

It’s been a rough election season so far in Plainfield — and you can add two more candidates to the list of those who have been ousted from the April 9 ballot.

Two Plainfield Park District Board of Commissioners candidates have withdrawn from the race after a park district resident challenged signatures on their nominating petitions, according to the Will County Clerk’s office.

Park board president Michael Brann, the lone incumbent in the race, withdrew last week after a Jan. 9 electoral board meeting regarding a challenge filed by Roger Domagala, a rep for the clerk’s office said.

The spokeswoman said Domagala also filed an objection to the petitions of candidate Thomas Breier, alleging that neither candidate had enough valid signatures to stay on the ballot. In his objections, Domagala cited reasons such as the fact that some petition signers are not registered voters at the addresses they listed; some were not park district residents; and some signatures did not match official signatures on record with the Will County Clerk’s office.

Breier withdrew from the race before a scheduled Jan. 15 hearing, according to the clerk’s office.

His wife, Minnie Breier, said he intends to run as a write-in candidate.

Brann did not respond to a message from Patch on Thursday.

The candidates’ withdrawals leave two official candidates on the ballot. Two seats on the board are up for election, each carrying a six-year term.

On Tuesday, three Plainfield Library District Board of Trustees candidates were removed from the ballot following election challenges from park district commissioner Peter Hurtado, whose daughter is seeking a spot on the library board.

Village president candidate Michael Lambert was also ousted from the ballot, while incumbent Mayor Mike Collins survived an election challenge.
