Plainfield to Replace Ash-Borer Stricken Trees

More than 200 trees will be planted to replace infected trees that have been removed.

Plainfield village trustees on Monday voted to waive bidding, and spend $85,000 purchase 225 parkway trees from the Suburban Tree Consortium.

The purchase is another step in the fight against the emerald ash borer, an invasive insect species known to burrow into trees, destroying them from the inside out.

Director of Public Works Allen Persons said the village has already removed 1,800 parkway trees in an attempt to eradicate the insect, and crews are slowly replacing the trees.

The $85,000 tree purchase is already in this year's budget, Persons said. He said the new trees could be planted by May 1.

Plainfield has been a member of the tree consortium since 2005.
