Report: Tom Cross Considering Run for Treasurer
An official announcement could come in the next few weeks.
Rumors have been swirling since May, and it looks like an announcement will come soon: State Rep. Tom Cross, R-Oswego, will reportedly step down from his post as House Republican Leader to run for a statewide office.
On Wednesday, Cross told WJOL's Scott Slocum that an official announcement will come over the next couple weeks regarding his new political ambitions.
According to ABC 7, Cross revealed he's considering a bid for state treasurer in a call with other House Republicans.
Cross was first elected in 1992. He ran unopposed for reelection last November.
On Wednesday, Crain's Chicago Business published this statement from the Republican leader:
"Serving as House Republican Leader has been an immense privilege and a humbling honor and I will forever cherish the friendships, the successes and, yes, even the battles. As I consider the challenge of serving Illinois at a higher level, I did ask my colleagues in the House Republican Caucus to begin the process of a succession plan so that a new leader may be chosen in preparation for the 2014 elections. I will be announcing my plans within the next two weeks."
