Statewide Cell Phone Driving Ban Now Official: Quinn Signs Law

New law takes effect Jan. 1, 2014.

Illinois drivers who want to chat and and drive will have to invest in some hands-free technology starting next winter.

On Friday, Gov. Pat Quinn signed legislation banning the use of hand-held cell phones will driving statewide. Use of hand-held phones is already illegal in construction zones and school zones.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, 2014, imposes fees starting at $75 for drivers caught gabbing behind the wheel.
